vim indent multiple lines

This was a revelation for me after years of using vim. Obviously not the guy to read all the how-to’s. If you want to change the indentation of a series of lines

Once hightlighted hit the > or < depending how you want to move those rows in or out,

Shocker! A bug in an Apple Upgrade

I recently saw my Airport Extreme base station (AE) was blinking amber meaning there is an upgrade waiting. I updated the firmware with a few clicks as I always do without question or issue, both on my laptops and many other Apple devices.
Trust is a valuable thing to earn and easy thing to lose.
This time my internet speeds dropped 80% not imagining it was the upgrade. I figured Verizon was having issues or the weather was causing trouble. I tried troubleshooting eventually contacted Verizon FIOS online chat support. They were responsive and helpful in determining it was my issue, my machine’s problem. Keith was helpful and knowledgable. He suggested a bunch of stuff that made little difference but we did determine it was my issue.
I discovered my laptop plugged into my AE (wired) got it’s usual 25MB down. This meant that my wifi was the issue. I remembered the recent AE upgrade. I looked into the Apple Support Forums and saw other people having my issue. Firmware 7.5.2 on the AE was causing issues. I downgraded by clicking on “Version” in the Airport Utility and selected 7.4.2. Updated and all my issues went away.
I may be a little more hesitant in the future to immediately apply upgrades but once in 10 years over many machines and devices? I can live with that. Finding viable solutions within minutes from the Apple Community using the Apple software supports my confidence.

Trying to Buy Locally

So now I had an idea of what I wanted to do, I needed to buy some track and switches. There are three hobby stores that carry N scale stuff in my area. Seems there should be more seeing as it is Westchester county New York. I spent a few hours visiting two of them both across the Hudson in Rockland county. One did not carry Kato products. The other did but was out of stock. I found this out after waiting a while they had an endless conversation with another, clearly longterm customer. I guess that is part of the draw of a local shop but as far as a business in the eyes of a customer it’s not really that appealing.
I am sure I will return to these in search of materials and scenery but online is where I went for service. Kato N scale Unitrack to be exact. The pricing seemed about the same from what I gathered in the stores and online stores.
I went to the online store where I bought my starter kit, White Rose Hobbies. I ran into a bit of trouble because a few products lacked images and descriptions did not match what my software listed.
I found Fifer hobby where they have a nice site with complete descriptions and images for what I was looking. I found everything and now must wait for delivery. They even refunded some of my shipping with a personal note.

Planning my model train

Being a bit of a geek I looked for software to help planning. There are several options. Most made for Windows which was ok thanks to Parallels on my Mac. After spending a week or two using a great piece of software to plan my track and the fact is was Mac based was a bonus. That software is RailModeller. It is shareware so you can use it for free with some good features disabled, like printing and saving. $50 is kinda high for it but I bought a license and printing layouts is nice when planning things. It also gives you a list of parts when you are done.
I planned out the physical table for the layout to be three feet deep by five feet wide with one by four’s lining and supporting the plywood. I am planning on using collapsable sawhorses to support it and make it easy to put away if needed. I also want to hinge the plywood to the frame and then close in the bottom with quarter inch plywood making a box out of the set for storage. We shall see how this goes…

WordPress permalink issue

Installing this instance of WordPress led me to an issue. I wanted to set up permalinks to be a little more friendly than id=1. The problem was my apache setup was not correct for doing links this way. I discovered this when the about page threw a 404 Page Not Found error. I eventually figured out it had to do with my Apache config.
The error under the submit button on the Permalink admin page is not teribly obvious underneath. Basically it says you need to edit yourself or change it’s permissions so WordPress can edit it.
You do need to enable the “AllowOverride” in the apache config so the htaccess file will be read and used.
I learned some good stuff related here.

Back to the beginning!

I am picking up my old hobby of model trains after a much too long absence. I have dabbled but life and kids sidetracked me. Now I am back and am planning to document the experience in order to give others some help I much need. There is a real lack of comprehensive information for model trains. There is a lot of info but none of it seems to tell me straight up what I want to know. It is like most things that if you know it then why would you document it. Hopefully this will not fall into that trap.

We bought my sons a O gauge train and set up a simple layout in his trundle but that is not what I am talking about. I had HO trains as a kid but never the resources to really do what I wanted. Now I have those and am limited only in space. So N gauge it is!

The model train world has come a long way since the 1980′s. DCC to say it plainly. I will explain more about that later as I learn it. DCC lets you control multiple trains and everything else connected on a single track and even a computer!

So my basic N set is on the truck for delivery.

This link is where I bought it and will let you know how it goes…
